Story Title:"Joseph has a Problem" Scripture Reference:"James 1:5" Level One: I see a boy. He is Joseph. Level Two: Look! This is a boy. He is Joseph. He feels confused. Joseph is reading the Bible. He will be happy! Level Three: This is Joseph Smith. He is 14 years old. He is really worried because he has a problem. "What church is right? What church is wrong?" he asks. Joseph takes the Bible and sits down at his table. He opens it and starts to read. There he finds the answer to his problem. He must ask God which church is true. Level Four: In 1820, Joseph Smith was a 14-year-old boy who lived in Palmyra, New York. During that time, all the churches in his city were claiming to be true. Joseph listened to all the preachers, but he did not know which one to follow. He really wanted to know which church was true. Joseph could not make up his mind about what to do. So, he decided to go to the Bible for help. In James Chapter 1 Verse 5 it says, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God." This touched Joseph's heart and it made sense to him. Why not ask God? He knew that God would answer his prayer. Joseph, who had never prayed out loud before, decided that he would do what the scripture said to do. He would ask God! Story Title:"Joseph Prays" Scripture Reference:"JSH 15-17" Level One: Joseph sees the Father and the Son. Joseph is happy. Level Two: Joseph is praying to God. "Help me, please," he asks. Joseph sees the Father and the Son. Now, he is happy. Level Three: The following morning, Joseph got up early and went to the woods. Once there, Joseph knelt down and prayed. "Oh, Lord! Help me, please!" he exclaimed. All of a sudden, he saw the Father and the Son. He couldn't believe his eyes! God told him not to join any of the churches. None of them have all the truth. Joseph was happy and knew what to do. Level Four: It was on the morning of a beautiful, clear day, early in the spring of eighteen hundred and twenty that Joseph retired to the woods to ask God which church he should join. He knelt down and started to pray. "Oh, Lord, I don't know what to do! Please help me!" he exclaimed. All of a sudden, a very bright pillar of light appeared above his head. That light came down until it rested upon him. He felt a warm and wonderful sensation in his heart. He could see the Father and the Son. He could not believe his eyes! God pointed to his Son, Jesus Christ, and told Joseph to listen to Jesus. Jesus told Joseph that none of the churches were His. He should not join any of them. Because Joseph prayed, he found a solution to his problem. Then Joseph was at peace. Story Title:"Joseph and Moroni" Scripture Reference:"JSH 30-47" Level One: This is Joseph. This is Moroni. God sent Moroni. Level Two: Joseph is praying. Look! Joseph sees Moroni. He is an Angel. "God wants you to translate this book, Joseph", Moroni says. God will help you! Level Three: Three years later, Joseph was saying his evening prayers before going to bed. Suddenly, an angel appeared. The angel said his name was Moroni and that he was a messenger from God. "Joseph, God has prepared a history of his people that he needs you to translate from gold plates". At that moment, Joseph could see where the Gold Plates were buried. Moroni repeated some scriptures from the Bible. The prophets of old knew about the Gold Plates and treasured what was on them. Moroni told Joseph that this was a very important work and that Joseph must prepare himself to do it. Level Four: Three years went by. One night, Joseph was kneeling down beside his bed seeking more inspiration from God. He knew that God would answer him like he did before. As he was praying, a light appeared in his room that gradually got brighter. In the light, an angel in a white robe appeared. He was standing in the air. His countenance was like lightening. He told Joseph that his name was Moroni. "Joseph, don't be afraid. I am a messenger of God. God has asked me to come here to tell you what he wants from you," Moroni said. God wants you to translate a sacred record kept on Gold Plates. While Moroni was explaining to Joseph about the gold plates, Joseph saw a vision of where the plates were deposited. Moroni told Joseph that the plates were a record of the former inhabitants of the American continent. He said that they contained the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ as it was delivered to these ancient inhabitants by the Savior himself. Moroni recited several scriptures from the Bible to Joseph. These scriptures prophesied of the coming forth of the Gold Plates. Then, Moroni ascended into heaven and disappeared. That night, Moroni returned three more times to repeat the same message from God, just as he had the first time. Story Title:"The Golden Plates" Scripture Reference:"JSH 5—54" Level One: Look! The Gold Plates are in a stone box. Joseph reads the Gold Plates. Joseph prints the Book of Mormon. The book tells about Jesus. Level Two: Joseph goes to the Hill Cumorah. The Golden Plates are in a stone box. He goes there for four years until he can take them out. He translates the plates by the power of God. A man named Oliver Cowdery helps him. He prints the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon teaches about Jesus Christ. Level Three: The following day Joseph went to the Hill Cumorah. His vision guided him to the Golden Plates. He wanted to take them out of the stone box but he couldn't. Moroni told Joseph to return to the Hill Cumorah every year for four years, so he could prepare to receive the plates. After four years, Moroni gave Joseph the Golden Plates. Joseph had to protect and translate them. Joseph did translate the book by the power of God. A man, named Oliver Cowdery, helped by writing the words Joseph said. The translated record was printed and made into a book called the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is a history of people who lived on the American continent. It tells about Jesus Christ and his visit to them. The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ. Level Four: It was on the following day that Joseph went to the Hill Cumorah, where the golden plates were deposited. The moment Joseph arrived at the designated place, he knew it because of the vision he had had the previous night. Under a very large rock was a stone box in which the plates were laid. Joseph made an attempt to take them out, but Moroni appeared and told him not to do so. "Moroni said Joseph was not yet ready to receive the plates, but that he should return to this exact place on the same day each year for four years. During those four years, Joseph was prepared to receive the record on the gold plates. At long last, on 22 September 1827, after having gone each year to the place where the golden plates were deposited, Moroni delivered them up to Joseph with the charge that he should protect them with his life. Through the power of God, Joseph translated some of the record using the Urim and Thummim. The Urim and Thummim was a special tool designed by God to help Joseph translate. Oliver Cowdery helped Joseph by writing the words as he translated them. Finally, Joseph took the translated words to a printer and had them made into a book, which is called the Book of Mormon. This book is a history of people who were guided by God to the American continent 600 years before Christ. These people had prophets and lived the Law of Moses until Jesus Christ came to visit them in America after his death in Jerusalem. The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ. Story Title:"The Priesthood" Scripture Reference:"D&C 12, 27:12" Level One: This is Joseph and Oliver. They are praying. They see John the Baptist. They can baptize each other. Level Two: Joseph and Oliver are praying in the woods. They see John the Baptist. John the Baptist gives Joseph and Oliver the power to baptize. Joseph baptizes Oliver. Oliver baptizes Joseph. Level Three: While Joseph and Oliver were translating the Golden Plates, they read about baptism. They decided to ask God how to get the authority to baptize. On May 15, 1829 they went to the woods and started praying. All of a sudden, the heavenly messenger who had baptized Jesus Christ appeared. It was John the Baptist. He gave Joseph and Oliver the Aaronic Priesthood, the power of God and the authority to baptize. Then, he asked Joseph to baptize Oliver, and Oliver to baptize Joseph afterwards. Level Four: While Joseph and Oliver were translating the gold plates, they read about baptism. Since they wanted to understand how someone could have the authority to baptize, they decided to ask God. On May 15, 1829, they went into the woods and prayed. Suddenly, John the Baptist, a heavenly messenger who had baptized Jesus long ago, descended in a cloud of light and laid his hands upon them. In that way, John gave both Joseph and Oliver the Aaronic Priesthood, the power of God and the authority to baptize. "Joseph, you should baptize Oliver, and afterwards Oliver should baptize you", John stated. That was exactly what Joseph and Oliver did. No sooner had they been baptized, by coming out of the water, than they experienced great and glorious blessings from their Heavenly Father. Story Title:"The Articles of Faith" Scripture Reference:" History of the Church Vol 4. 535-541" Level One: This is John and Joseph. Joseph tells John about the church. Level Two: This is John Wentworth. He wants to write in his newspaper about the church. Joseph gives him the Articles of Faith. Level Three: John Wentworth was a newspaperman who wanted to write an article about the church. Joseph Smith wrote down the beliefs of the church and gave them to John. The document that Joseph Smith wrote later became known as The Articles of Faith. Level Four: Word began to spread about the "new church" that Joseph Smith had organized. Curiosity was spreading throughout the community, so the local newspaperman John Wentworth decided that he wanted to write an article about the church. Joseph wrote 13 basic points of belief for Mr. Wentworth's article. Now, we know these 13 points of doctrine as The Articles of Faith. They help us to understand Heavenly Father's plan for us and what The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is about. They also help us to share the gospel with people who do not understand the beliefs of the church. They are now considered scripture and are found in the The Pearl of Great Price. Story Title:"The Gospel is Restored" Scripture Reference:"" Level One: I see Jesus. I see Joseph. Jesus loves us. Joseph loves us. Level Two: Jesus taught the people when he lived on the earth. Jesus teaches Joseph the same things. Jesus gives Joseph the power of God. Joseph teaches the gospel of Jesus Christ. Level Three: Jesus Christ needed to restore his gospel to the earth in the same way that it was organized when he was on the earth. That included restoring his power to the earth. That power is called the priesthood. Jesus Christ called Joseph Smith to be the prophet. Joseph Smith called twelve men to be apostles of the church. The prophet and apostles receive revelations to lead Christ's church. Level Four: Part of the Restoration of the gospel was to restore God's powers, or the priesthood, to man. On April 3rd 1836, Jesus Christ and other prophets from the Bible appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in the Kirtland Temple. During this vision, Jesus Christ gave the priesthood keys to Joseph Smith. Priesthood keys are special powers that God gives to the living prophet. These keys have been passed down from prophet to prophet. Many blessings come through these keys such as the authority to seal families for time and all eternity. The person who holds these keys has the authority to act as Christ's mouthpiece here on earth. President Thomas S. Monson holds the same keys today. President Monson guides the church through inspiration directly from God. Story Title:"Modern Day Prophets" Scripture Reference:"" Level One: I see Joseph. I see the prophets of God. The prophets speak for Jesus Christ. Level Two: Jesus Christ speaks to the prophet. The prophet tells us what Jesus wants us to know. If we obey the things that the prophet tells us then we will be happy. Level Three: The prophet tells us things that Jesus Christ wants us to know. Moses, Isaiah, Nephi and Mormon were prophets. Today the prophet is Thomas S. Monson. He prays to know what Jesus wants done in his church. When we follow the prophet we are following Jesus Christ. Level Four: Jesus Christ has always spoken to his people through prophets. Moses, Isaiah, Nephi and Mormon were prophets of old who taught the people through good and bad times. Just like the people of ancient times needed prophets to guide them, we need a prophet to guide us today. Today we are blessed with a prophet who leads and guides us. President Thomas S. Monson is the prophet today. Jesus Christ leads our church by guiding and directing President Monson's actions and decisions. President Monson teaches the members of the church those things that Christ has communicated to him. When we listen and act upon President Monson's words, we are also listening to Christ and walking in His path. Story Title:"Christ's Church" Scripture Reference:"" Level One: I see the church. Jesus leads the church. The church of Jesus Christ is true. Level Two: The church of Jesus Christ is on the earth today. It is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us everything we need to know to return to live with God. Level Three: Through Joseph Smith, Jesus Christ organized his church on the earth today in the latter days. Jesus commanded that the church be named after him so that the world would know that it is his church. The church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is organized exactly the same as the church that Christ organized when he lived on the earth. Jesus Christ leads his church by speaking to the prophet. The prophet speaks the words of Jesus Christ. Christ also speaks to his people through the scriptures. Level Four: There is one church on the earth today that is set up exactly the same as the church that Christ set up 2000 years ago. That is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The church is called "The Church of Jesus Christ" because it really is Christ's church. Christ leads this church and directs the Prophet on how to lead it the way He would lead it. Because Jesus Christ leads the church through the prophet, Jesus Christ is the true head of the church. The Book of Mormon tells us that Christ, our Savior, made His appearance in America after he was resurrected and that He planted the gospel here in all its fullness. The same powers, priesthoods, ordinances, blessings and gifts are here on the earth once again for us to know of and enjoy. We are commanded to share the gospel with others. We can do missionary work all our lives. Today there are 13 million member of the church. We need to help spread the gospel to all the earth. Level Four: Because The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is Christ's church; he wants everyone to know about it. He loves us and he wants us to be happy. The gospel helps us achieve that happiness. The Lord says that missionary work is the responsibility of all who follow Him. Church members can be missionaries by teaching by the spirit through word and example. Since the restoration, there are now over 13 million members of the church and 53,000 missionaries on 344 different missions all over the world. In this place, Lehi built an altar of stones and made an offering to God to thank him for saving his family. Story Title:"I Will Go And Do" Scripture Reference:"1 Nephi 3:1-9" Level One: Look! Nephi will get the brass plates. He obeys the Lord. He is happy. Level Two: Nephi obeys God's command. He will go and get the plates. Lehi is happy with Nephi. Laman and Lemuel do not want to go. Nephi talks to them and they all go to Jerusalem. Level Three: The Lord asked Lehi to send his sons back to Jerusalem for the plates of brass. Nephi told his father he would obey God. He would go and do the things the Lord had commanded. Lehi was grateful for Nephi's faith. Laman and Lemuel did not want to go. They did not have faith in the Lord. Nephi told them about the importance of the brass plates. The plates contained the words of God revealed through the prophets. Nephi convinced Laman and Lemuel that they should go back to get the plates in Jerusalem. Level Four: While in the valley of Lemuel, Lehi received a revelation. God commanded that his sons should go back to Jerusalem to get the Plates of Brass from Laban. When Lehi told Nephi, he said that he would go and do the things that the Lord had commanded. Nephi said he knew that the Lord would not command something that He was not willing to help them accomplish. Nephi told his father that he would go to Laban's house, obtain the records, and bring them back to the wilderness. Lehi rejoiced after hearing his son's words. However, Laman and Lemuel did not want to go. They thought it would be too hard and too dangerous. They did not have faith in the Lord. Nephi explained to Laman and Lemuel the importance of getting the brass plates. The plates told about the Jews, the genealogy of Lehi's forefathers, and contained the words of God revealed through the prophets. Nephi told Laman and Lemuel that they would need the plates to teach their children. Nephi convinced his brothers to obey God's command, return to Jerusalem, and get the Plates of Brass. Nephi told them that they should stay until they had succeeded in the Lord's errand and obtained the plates. Level Four: Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi traveled back to Jerusalem to get the brass plates. They drew lots so as to decide who should go to Laban's house. Laman was chosen. Therefore, he went to Laban and asked him for the records that were engraven upon the plates. Laban's face was flushed with anger. Not only did he refuse to give Laban the plates, he also wanted to kill him. Luckily, Laman was able to escape. When Laman met his brothers and told them what had happened they became so afraid that they wanted to give up and return to their father in the wilderness. They escape. Level Three: Laban was a wicked man. He saw all the money and gold and wanted to keep it for himself. Instead of giving the boys the plates, Laban sent his guards to kill them. Nephi, Sam, Laman and Lemuel left their property behind and ran for their lives. The brothers all managed to escape and hid in a cave. Level Four: Laban was a very wicked man and had his heart set on the things of the world. He saw the great wealth of Lehi and wanted all the valuables for himself. Instead of trading the plates for the money and valuables, Laban falsely accused the brothers of being robbers and sent his guards to kill them. Lehi's sons had no other choice but to leave their property behind. Despite being chased through the city by the guards, Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi were able to escape. Outside the city walls they found a cave in which to hide. Exhausted, they all hid in the cavity of a rock. Suddenly, an angel appeared and stopped Laman and Lemuel from hurting their brothers. Then, the angel told them to go back to Jerusalem where God was going to deliver Laban into their hands. Laman and Lemuel were afraid of Laban and his men. They didn't believe God could do as the angel had said. Nephi, who had become a leader over his brothers, told them to have faith in the Lord and they all went back to Jerusalem. Level Four: Once in the Cave, Laman and Lemuel became very angry with Nephi and Sam because Nephi's plan failed and they had lost all their money. Out of frustration, Laman and Lemuel blamed their younger brothers and started to beat them with a rod. Fortunately, an angel appeared and rebuked Laman and Lemuel. "Why do ye smite your brothers with a rod?" the angel asked. "Go up to Jerusalem again, and the Lord will deliver Laban into your hands". After saying that, the angel departed. Laman and Lemuel were afraid of Laban and his men. They wondered how the Lord would be able to do what the angel had said. For that reason, they doubted and could not make up their minds about what to do. "Let us be faithful in the Lord!", Nephi told them. Nephi, who had become a leader over his brothers, encouraged his brothers to have faith in the Lord and return to Jerusalem to fulfill the commandment. Laman and Lemuel didn't believe like their younger brother, so they stayed behind. Once in the city of Jerusalem, Nephi made his way toward Laban's house. It was night. As he was walking he saw a drunken man lying on the ground. That man was Laban. Level Four: Since Nephi firmly believed that God would be able to help them get the plates from Laban, he decided to sneak into the city alone without knowing beforehand how God would deliver Laban. Laman and Lemuel did not have this kind of conviction and trust in God. They stayed behind. That night, while Nephi's brothers hid outside the city walls, Nephi crept into Jerusalem and went towards Laban's house. As Nephi got nearer, he saw a drunken man lying on the side of the road. To his surprise, he found that it was Laban! God had delivered him into Nephi's hands. Story Title:"Nephi Tricks Zoram" Scripture Reference:"1 Nephi 4:20-28" Level One: Nephi puts on Laban's clothes. Zoram is Laban's servant. I see Nephi talking to Zoram and getting the plates. Now, Zoram is with Nephi. Level Two: God tells Nephi to kill Laban. Even though he does not want to, Nephi kills Laban with a sword. He dresses up in Laban's clothes. Nephi asks Laban's servant, Zoram, to give the plates to him. Zoram obeys and follows Nephi out of the city. Level Three: When Nephi saw Laban, the Holy Ghost commanded him to kill Laban. Nephi had never done something like that before and did not want to kill. God knew Laban was wicked and told Nephi that it was better for one man to die than for many people to go without the scriptures. The Holy Ghost also told him that the Lord had delivered Laban into his hands. Nephi took the sword and cut off Laban's head. Nephi then took Laban's clothes and dressed up just like him. After that, Nephi headed to Laban's house. When he got there he told Laban's servant, Zoram, to get the plates and come with him. Zoram didn't hesitate to do so because he hadn't realized it was not really Laban. Level Four: Nephi saw Laban's sword and picked it up. At that moment, the Holy Ghost told him to kill Laban. Nephi had never done something like that before! Although he knew it was the opportunity to get the brass plates, he did not want to take a life. "Slay him, for the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands," the Holy Ghost said. It is better for one wicked man to die than for an entire people to go without the words of the prophets. Because God had commanded it, Nephi took Laban by the hair, and cut his head off with his own sword. Then, he took Laban's clothes and put them on. As Nephi was going to the treasury, where the plates were kept, he saw Laban's servant, Zoram, holding its keys. Nephi looked and sounded as if he were Laban. Therefore, when he told Zoram to get the plates, he obeyed without hesitation. Nephi and Zoram left the city together. Once Nephi was out of the city and saw his brothers he called to them so they would not be afraid. At that moment, Zoram realized his master was not with him and became afraid. Zoram tried to run away. Nephi, being large in stature, was able to stop Zoram. Nephi told Zoram that if he came with them he would be a free man. He ordered Alma to stand up and listen to him. "Why persecutes thou the Church of God?" the angel asked him. "Behold, the Lord hath heard the prayers of thy father, and I have come to convince you of His power", he explained to them. After saying this, the angel departed. He also told him to protect the plates according to God's commandments and to hand them down from generation to generation. Level Four: Once Mosiah's sons had repented of their sins, they returned to his father, King Mosiah, to express their desire to share the blessings of the gospel with the Lamanites. They believed that in that way, they might cure the Lamanites of their hatred towards the Nephites. As King Mosiah seriously feared for their lives, he prayed to God to ask him whether or not he should let them go. The Lord told him that he should because many Lamanites would believe in their words, and he added that he shouldn't worry since he would provide them with his protection. Therefore, Mosiah's sons took their journey into the wilderness to preach the word among the Lamanites. Since King Mosiah had none of his sons to confer the kingdom upon, he made the decision to take the brass plates and give them to Alma the Younger. Therefore, Ammon told them to go in search of the flocks, gather them together and bring them back to the watering place. The servants were able to get all of the sheep gathered again. However, the Lamanite robbers came back to scatter their animals again. Ammon told the servants to guard the sheep while he fought against them. The robbers did not fear Ammon because they took for granted that they would be able to kill him easily. What they did not know was that the power of God was with Ammon. Therefore, he started throwing stones at them with his sling and with so much power that those men could not believe their eyes! To their surprise, they could not even hit him with their stones, so they took their clubs to kill him. Nevertheless, Ammon cut off the arms of all the men who lifted their clubs to smite him. Then, Ammon came to the king to explain to him he was not the Great Spirit, but a servant of God. The king did not speak for an hour! Bitterly disappointed, he asked his son the reason why he had not come to the celebration he had put on for all the kings in the area. When he saw that Lamoni was with Ammon, who he considered a lying Nephite, he became so angry that he ordered his son to kill Ammon. Since King Lamoni refused to do so, his father became even angrier, and tried to kill him. Ammon stepped forward to protect King Lamoni, and the king tried to kill him too. Nevertheless, Ammon defended himself and wounded the king's arm. Being scared that Ammon could kill him, the king said to him: " If thou wilt spare me I will grant unto thee whatsoever thou wilt ask, even to half of the kingdom". "If thou wilt grant that my brethren be cast out of prison…I will let you go", Ammon answered. Lamoni's father accepted not only because he had realized that Ammon didn't want to hurt him, but also because he had seen the love Ammon had for his son. Although the Anti-Nephi Lehies knew that those Lamanites had begun to make preparations for war against them, they decided not to fight back; they chose to suffer death rather than to defend themselves. When the wicked Lamanites came and began killing them, the people of God lay down and prayed, which made the Lamanites realize that they would not fight back.
